Typhoon Ketsana: The Phillipines Needs Your Help


On 26 September 2009, Typhoon Ketsana struck the Philippines. It submerged 80% of the capital, Manila, and affected over 450,000 people in neighbouring provinces. With wind speeds reaching 110kph, the death toll has risen to 100. It is the worst disaster to hit the capital in decades.

Thousands of homes, many of them poor settlements by rivers, have been badly affected. Many people have lost everything to ceiling-high flood waters that also brought mud, debris and garbage, and left victims on their roofs for as long as 20 hours without food or water.

World Vision Philippines National Director Elnora Avarientos said, "The impact of this typhoon on Manila has been shocking. The city is in a state of trauma and unbelief following this massive and sudden flooding. Many have lost everything, including bedding, food, education materials and clothing. The poorest living in slums and settlements are especially badly hit."

Following the typhoon, most of the city has been covered in mud. Those who managed to flee on foot were left grappling with surging water, floating debris and water up to their necks.
